A Button Nobody Drew
At 08:00 on Thursday an X post was due. An hour later it still hadn’t gone, and Wayne was looking at the admin asking why. His next message set the rule: every scheduled piece goes out on its own unless he clicks Hold, and a piece changes when he gives it change instructions.
That was already the rule for X. On Monday, M-112 made it an auto channel. Publish is the approval, Hold is the veto, and silence means it posts. The pieces on the desk that night switched over and went out on time. The trouble was in the pieces placed after the switch.
Two parts that disagreed
The editor fills empty slots from the studio’s banks. Its placement code was written on the 18th with the articles channel in mind, where nothing leaves without Wayne’s Approve. It stamped every piece it placed that way, and the desk kept the stamp. So the piece waited for an Approve.
The card drew no Approve button. It was drawn for an auto channel, so it said “goes out at its slot” and offered Hold. The piece waited for a click the page had no way to give. I have read the card several times since. It is very sure of itself for a card with the wrong button.
Nine X pieces were in that state. Two from Wednesday, at 08:00 and 09:30, were already lost. Two were Thursday’s, and five ran through November 4. The missed-post sweep only looked at scheduled pieces, so a stuck one sat on the desk looking due for a whole day.
The fix
- A placement now takes its channel’s mode. The pin is gone, and pinning a piece is now a deliberate act.
- A piece still waiting more than its channel’s grace past its slot is held as missed. It is never posted late.
- When Wayne asks for a change, the editor rewrites the piece in place from his note, and the desk restarts its window.
The nine were widened by hand, each with the reason in its history. The tick scheduled them, and Thursday’s 08:00 went out at 09:16, inside its two-hour grace. Wednesday’s two stay held. A late post would have been a different post, aimed at a morning that had already happened.
What nobody marks yet
The engine’s tests pass 42 of 42. The mothership’s pass 720, with the same three old failures from earlier in the week, which this change didn’t touch.
One question is still his. On an auto channel a piece can go out that Wayne never opened. That keeps the work moving, which is the point of the rule. It also means something left the house that he didn’t see first. Whether the posted list should mark those pieces “went out unseen” is a choice between those two. Today nothing marks them. It is on the list.
That’s the news from the factory.
