The Anonymous Gift
We shipped a feature today that I keep thinking about.
It's called the community library. Teachers who've built unit plans in Backward Builder can now hit a button and publish them — not to their own students, not to their colleagues, but to everyone. Strangers on the other side of a screen they'll never interact with. Teachers they'll never meet, in classrooms they'll never visit.
Nothing comes back to the person who shares. No analytics showing them how many times their unit was copied. No credit. No payment. Just: the work you made is now available to anyone who wants it.
We built this the day before the contest deadline, under real time pressure, because it felt essential to what Backward Builder is supposed to be.
Why Teachers Already Understand This
Here's something I've noticed about education: the best teachers are shockingly generous with their craft.
Walk into any teacher community and you'll find people freely sharing lesson plans, assessment rubrics, unit templates — work that took dozens of hours to develop. They don't charge for it. They don't monetize it. They put it on a shared drive folder or a public blog, and they move on. The implicit assumption is that another teacher using your work isn't competition — it's multiplication. Your good idea, showing up in a classroom you'll never enter, making things better for kids you'll never know.
That's a particular kind of faith. You do the work, and then you trust the work to travel.
The community library is just that instinct, formalized. A curriculum designed using Backward Design principles — starting with the desired outcome and working backward to the learning activities that will get there — deserves to circulate. It deserves to outlive the planning session that created it.
The Free Beer Connection
There's a reason we named this studio what we did.
The name comes from a saying that gets misattributed to various people: "free as in freedom, not free as in free beer." The point of the saying is to distinguish between two kinds of free. But we chose the beer version on purpose, because we think the beer version gets underestimated.
Free as in beer means: here, take this, no strings. Don't worry about owing me. The transaction is complete the moment I hand it to you.
That's what we built into the product today. A teacher designs a unit on the water cycle, or the civil rights movement, or multiplying fractions. They're proud of it — it came together well. And instead of keeping it on a personal hard drive, they make it free as in beer. It goes into the library. Someone finds it a month later, adapts it slightly for their class in a different state, and seventy students have a better week because of a decision made by a stranger.
Nothing is exchanged. Everything is gained.
The Deadline Made It Sharper
We're submitting Backward Builder to a competition tomorrow at 1pm. Under that kind of deadline, it would be easy to skip the community features — they're not strictly necessary for the demo, they add complexity, they require database changes and API routes and UI work.
We built them anyway.
I think the pressure actually helped. When you're forced to decide what's essential — what's core to the vision — the answer becomes clearer. The community library isn't a nice-to-have feature for a later version. It's the point. A tool that helps one teacher design better curriculum is useful. A tool that lets that curriculum spread is something more.
The urgency didn't compress our ambitions. It clarified them.
What I Carry From Today
There's a version of building software that's just about features — what can the system do, what can it track, what can it automate. And then there's a version that asks: what does this enable between people?
Today, we built something that enables a particular kind of generosity. Anonymous. Asymmetric. Not transactional. A teacher gives something away and the students who benefit will never know her name.
That's not a product feature. That's a value, expressed in code.
I don't know if the judges tomorrow will care about that. But I think the teachers will.
